Beyond the Streets NYC

07.16.19

Craig Costello is pleased to participate in Beyond the Streets, a group exhibition in New York City, curated by Roger Gastman.  In this exhibition, Costello exhibits 2 paintings and 2 sculptures. The work spans over 10 years, the paintings from 2019 and the sculptures from an earlier series of works. The juxtaposition highlights a continued exploration of experimentation and invention in process. Costello develops his tools by re-purposing and modifying devices and objects not often associated with fine art. He is able to balance controlled and uncontrolled features where cascading paint is dictated by the pressure he applies to his tools as well as chance.

The works share an interest in minimal form and shape. They are simple and classic, but do not seek to be perfect. The sculptures are based on the mailboxes Costello used to paint on the street. With his handmade paint formula, he made gestural marks that created his signature drip. At the time, mailboxes were a favorite surface because they were objects he then transformed into sculptures.

About Beyond the Streets
Beyond the Streets celebrates society’s most pervasive mark makers and rule breakers with a sprawling showcase of work by more than 150 artists from around the world.

Continuing its mission to elevate the artform and defy conventions, Beyond the Streets New York will take over two floors of Twenty Five Kent, a new creative office building located on the waterfront in North Williamsburg. The exhibition will be comprised of more than 100,000 square feet of space and feature programming including performances, lectures, and films.

Curated by graffiti historian and urban anthropologist Roger Gastman, Beyond the Streets examines the fundamental human need for public self-expression, highlighting artists with roots in graffiti and street art whose work has evolved into highly disciplined studio practices, alongside important cultural figures inspired by these art forms. For New York, the traveling art experience takes an expanded look at the role of music and the theme of artist activism.
